Endoscopy

You may require endoscopy if you are experiencing symptoms such as persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, altered bowel habits, rectal bleeding, or abdominal pain. Colonoscopy is also recommended for bowel cancer screening, particularly in individuals over 50 or those with a family history of bowel cancer or polyps

Gastroscopy involves passing a thin, flexible camera through the mouth into the upper gastrointestinal tract while you are under sedation. Colonoscopy is performed under sedation via the rectum. Both procedures typically take 15–45 minutes. Biopsies or polyp removal can be performed during the same procedure. You will be monitored in recovery until the sedation wears off

Pre-procedure (Gastroscopy): Fast for at least 6 hours prior to the procedure. Pre-procedure (Colonoscopy): A full bowel preparation (laxative regime) is required the day prior — detailed instructions will be provided. A clear fluid diet is required the day before. Post-procedure: You will not be able to drive for 24 hours due to sedation. Rest for the remainder of the day. Mild bloating or wind is normal.
