GALL BLADDER SURGERY
(Cholecystectomy)
Gallbladder surgery, or cholecystectomy, is a procedure to remove the gallbladder, most commonly performed to treat gallstones and the complications they can cause. The gallbladder is a small organ that stores bile to aid digestion, and while it plays a role in digestion, it is not essential for life — most patients experience no significant change to digestion after it's removed.
At LIFEXCLINICS, gallbladder surgery is performed by Dr Robert George, a Specialist Soft Tissue Surgeon (MBBS MS FRACS), using minimally invasive techniques wherever possible to support a faster, more comfortable recovery.
Why gallbladder surgery may be needed:
Gallbladder removal is most commonly recommended for:
- Gallstones (cholelithiasis) — hardened deposits that form within the gallbladder, which can cause pain or block bile flow
- Biliary colic — recurrent pain caused by gallstones temporarily obstructing the gallbladder outlet
- Cholecystitis — inflammation of the gallbladder, often caused by a blocked gallstone, which can range from mild to a surgical emergency
- Gallstone pancreatitis — inflammation of the pancreas caused by a gallstone blocking the bile duct
- Gallbladder polyps — growths within the gallbladder that may require removal depending on size and features
Signs and symptoms:
Common symptoms that may indicate a gallbladder problem include:
- Pain in the upper right abdomen, often after eating fatty foods
- Pain that radiates to the back or right shoulder blade
- Nausea or vomiting
- Bloating or indigestion
- Fever, in cases of infection or inflammation
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), which requires prompt assessment
The procedure:
Most gallbladder removals are performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), using several small incisions and a camera to guide the procedure. This approach is associated with less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal activity compared to open surgery. In select cases, such as more complex or inflamed gallbladders, a traditional open approach may be required, which Dr George will discuss with you if relevant to your case.
Recovery:
Most patients undergoing laparoscopic gallbladder removal go home the same day or after a short overnight stay, with a return to normal activities typically within one to two weeks. You'll be provided with detailed aftercare instructions to guide your recovery, including diet, activity, and wound care.
Your consultation:
Every gallbladder surgery begins with a thorough consultation, where your symptoms, imaging, and medical history are reviewed. Dr George will explain the recommended surgical approach, what to expect on the day of surgery, and potential risks, ensuring you feel fully informed before proceeding.
A personalised approach:
Dr Robert George's priority is a safe, efficient surgical approach tailored to your individual case, supported by our clinical team, throughout your journey from consultation to recovery.
