Hernia Surgery

You may be a good candidate for hernia surgery if you have a confirmed hernia causing pain, discomfort, or limitation of daily activities. Surgery is generally recommended when a hernia is enlarging, non-reducible, or poses a risk of strangulation. Candidates should be medically fit for surgery and anaesthesia. Dr George will assess your overall health, hernia type, and symptoms at consultation to determine the most appropriate surgical approach

Hernia repair is performed under general or local anaesthesia depending on the type and complexity. Laparoscopic (keyhole) repair involves small incisions through which a camera and instruments are inserted to reinforce the hernia with a surgical mesh. Open repair involves a single incision directly over the hernia. Most procedures take 30–90 minutes. Many patients are discharged the same day or after an overnight stay

Pre-operative: Fast for the required period prior to surgery as directed. Avoid blood-thinning medications as instructed by Dr George. Arrange for someone to drive you home. Cease smoking at least two weeks prior where possible. Post-operative: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for 4–6 weeks. Keep the wound site clean and dry. Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments. Contact the clinic immediately if you develop fever, increasing pain, redness, or wound discharge.
